How To Write a Real Estate Agent Cover Letter

A great real estate agent cover letter usually has five sections, outlined below. When possible, connect each section back to your sales, marketing, and other pertinent skills. The following advice and examples show what to include in your cover letter so it’s optimized for each job application.

1. Heading

At the top of the page, include your resume contact header, the date, and any basic details you have about your recipient (as in the example below). To set a clear focus, add the title “Real Estate Agent” to your contact header. You can then modify your title to align with each job posting. For instance, use the title “Commercial Real Estate Agent” if that’s closer to the role in question and still true to your experience.

(Note: Feel free to omit this section if you send your letter by email and your contact details are part of your signature.)

Example

Octavia Price
Real Estate Agent | [email protected] | (887) 766-5544 | 135 Address Rd., Bloomington, IN 20394

April 13, 2024

Shanae Peterson
Talent Specialist
Century 21 Scheetz
(445) 667-8899
[email protected]

2. Salutation

Whenever you can, address your recipient by name – it’s the quickest way to signal you’re sending a job-specific letter and not a boilerplate. If you can’t find the recipient’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager” so your greeting is still tailored somewhat to each real estate firm.

Examples

Dear Mr. Barber,

Dear Carpenter Realtors Talent Specialist:

3. “Hook” or introduction

Catch the reader’s attention by starting your letter with a clear example of your impact as a real estate agent. Choose a highlight that demonstrates your talent for engaging with buyers and sellers, as well as your skill at handling the many parts of a home sale.

Example

At my most recent performance appraisal, I was named the top-selling junior realtor at my agency. My supervisors praised my ability to build a warm rapport with clients and select properties to match their needs. I hope to use my strong interpersonal skills to generate outstanding profits at Century 21 Scheetz.

4. Body paragraph(s)

Use the main section of your letter to tell why this real estate job or employer suits you. For instance, you could share the company’s focus on creative property marketing. Or maybe the job posting describes a dynamic work culture similar to your recent experience.

Following this explanation, cite a few more of your main skills or achievements, possibly as bullet points. In the real estate agent cover letter sample below, see how the applicant uses bullets to cover relevant duty areas like client education and property descriptions.

Example

As an energetic realtor with three years’ experience selling residential properties, the chance to be part of a fast-growing company like Century 21 Scheetz is compelling. My prospecting ability and innovative mindset can make me a valuable member of your team.

My recent achievements include:

  • Writing engaging and eye-catching property descriptions that boosted cold inquiries by 65% over six months
  • Devising and producing an educational resource to help clients present their properties correctly, reducing the average time from listing to selling by two weeks
  • Consistently exceeding personal productivity targets by at least 21% over three years

5. Call to action

Finally, request an interview for the position. Consider briefly restating your ability to manage successful home sales or transactions. To end your cover letter, use a simple closing like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and then your name.

Example

Please feel free to contact me to arrange a convenient interview. I look forward to discussing my skills and experience further.

Sincerely,

Tanner Daniels

Real Estate Agent Cover Letter Tips

1. Quantify your success

With performance data like sales rankings or client referral rates, you can make your cover letter more specific and compelling to employers. In the example below, see how the candidate’s citing 35% growth makes a stronger impression than if he’d used a general phrase like “Boosting my client roster by a large amount…”

Example

Boosting my client roster by 35% in a single fiscal quarter was my most significant achievement of 2023. Through tireless professional networking and a talent for building rapport, I managed this fast growth. I am excited to continue my reputation for business generation as a real estate agent at Carpenter Realtors.

2. Highlight your skills and market knowledge

As part of your letter’s body text, add a short list of bullet points showing your success in key real estate agent work areas, like home staging, revenue growth, or client communications. Also, consider citing your knowledge of market factors and how you’ve used that insight to deliver value to home buyers or sellers.

Example

My recent accomplishments include:

  • Providing consistently outstanding education to clients on how to best showcase their homes, receiving a 98% satisfaction rating over three years
  • Training five new estate agents to improve their negotiation skills
  • Generating 23% more sales commission than any other agent on my team

3. Keep it concise

Limit your cover letter to one page, or around 250 words. Resist the urge to tell your whole career story, even if you have extensive background in real estate. Give just enough detail to pique hiring managers’ interest so they take a closer look at your resume.

Real Estate Agent Cover Letter Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make my cover letter introduction stand out?-

When possible, network. Start your letter by citing any connections you have with your recipient. If someone at the company alerted you to the job, use a line like "I was excited to hear from your colleague [Name] about [Company]'s new real estate agent position." Or, if you've already met your recipient, mention that with a line like "It was great speaking with you at the [event] last month."

How should I format my cover letter?-

Like your resume. Carry over that document’s basic format settings, such as font style, line spacing, and page margins.

Are cover letters becoming obsolete?-

No. As long as hiring managers want to know why you want the job and don’t have time to get your (initial) answer by interview, the cover letter will stay a key part of the job search.
